QU Women's Tennis Draws No. 2 Seed North Carolina in First Round of NCAA Tournament; Press Conference Video Available

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history. The Bobcats drew nationally-ranked No. 2 seed University of North Carolina Tar Heels (27-1, 14-0 ACC) and will travel to Chapel Hill for their first round matchup on Saturday, May 9 at 12 P.M. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

North Carolina was awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the postseason draw and will host the four-team bracket for the weekend. Dartmouth and William & Mary will meet in the first match at 9 A.M., followed by North Carolina and Quinnipiac at 12 P.M. The winners of the two matches will square off in the second round on Sunday, May 10 at 1 P.M.

Quinnipiac Press Conference - NCAA Tournament - First Round


The Bobcats are coming off of their eighth Division I Conference Championship after sweeping Niagara 4-0 on Sunday, April 26. Quinnipiac captured the MAAC's automatic bid and will make its second consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearance. Quinnipiac will travel to its sixth different NCAA tournament destination with the draw of the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Bobcats have traveled to Stanford three times, most recently in 2014 as well as UCLA (2011), the University of Georgia (2005), UCLA (2007) and Miami (Fla.) (2008) in its other NCAA tournament bids.

It was another impressive season for North Carolina, who was undefeated until losing in the ACC Tournament to the Virginia Cavaliers. The loss was North Carolina's first of the season, after starting the season 27-0 until falling to the Cavaliers. The Tar Heels have qualified for their 13th NCAA Tournament in the last 14 seasons. Last season, the Tar Heels lost to the NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins in the National Championship.

Tickets for the NCAA First and Second Rounds are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Children aged six and under are free. Gates for each day will open one hour prior to the beginning of competition. On Saturday the gates will open at 8 A.M. and 12 P.M. on Sunday.

All first and second round matches are played at campus sites. The final 16 teams square off at the NCAA Tennis Championships, hosted by the University of Baylor in Waco, Texas, beginning Friday, May 15. The national championship matches are set for Tuesday, May 19.
