HAMDEN, Conn. – Eight home matches and a challenging non-conference slate highlight the 2015 Quinnipiac women's soccer schedule, as it was announced on Thursday, June 25 by head coach Dave Clarke.
The schedule consists of 20 games total which include three preseason games in August. Along with the 10 mandatory MAAC games, Quinnipiac worked seven non-conference contests into the mix as well.
"The main thing was trying to replicate the MAAC season," Clarke said when asked about this year's schedule. "We were looking for as many Wednesday-Saturday games as possible for 2015, 2016 and beyond."
The three preseason games serve purpose for the Bobcats, as a total of 13 newcomers will join the program this fall. Their first taste of collegiate soccer will be on Aug. 12 (7 p.m.) when Quinnipiac takes on Hartford at the Oakwood Soccer Park in Portland. After that, Quinnipiac hosts former NEC rival CCSU on Aug. 15 (10 a.m.) and American International College on Aug. 21 (3:30 p.m.) at the QU Soccer Field.
The regular season slate kicks off on Monday, Aug. 24 (3 p.m.) with a home match against Holy Cross. The Patriot League foe comes to Hamden fresh off a 10-win season in 2014. Quinnipiac has fared well against the New England rival however, sporting a 7-4-1 all-time record against the Crusaders.
Quinnipiac opens road competition against Delaware State on Aug. 28 (7 p.m.) before participating in the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vt. The Bobcats take on New Hampshire on Sept. 4 (1:30 p.m.) and Vermont on Sept. 6 (1:30 p.m.). One of the few teams to end its season with a win, Delaware State won the Independent Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory over NJIT last season. Quinnipiac faces a second 2014 conference champion, as New Hampshire hoisted the America East trophy after a 2-1 victory over Hartford in the league tournament finals. The road trip concludes at Vermont, a team that Quinnipiac defeated 1-0 last year thanks to a goal from Jessica Fontaine (Enfield, Conn.) in the 65th minute at the QU Soccer Field.
The non-conference home slate wraps up the following week, where Quinnipiac plays host to Maine on Sept. 13 (1 p.m.) and Albany on Sept. 15 (4 p.m.). The Bobcats look to avenge a 1-0 loss to Maine last season after a Black Bear goal in the 83rd minute proved to be the difference. Quinnipiac owns a perfect 3-0 record against Albany, renewing a rivalry that hasn't seen action since 2005.
Saturday, Sept. 19 is circled on the calendar for Quinnipiac soccer, as it marks the MAAC opener across the board. A daunting task to say the least, the Bobcats host Rider University – a team that won the MAAC Championship last year to earn the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Rider edged QU in the lone meeting last year, 2-1.
In addition to Rider, Quinnipiac hosts Niagara on Oct. 3 (1 p.m.), Monmouth on Oct. 10 (1 p.m.), Manhattan on Oct. 14 (3 p.m.) and Siena on Oct. 28 (2 p.m.). Monmouth won the regular season title and served as the host of the 2014 MAAC Tournament.
After the MAAC opener with Rider, Quinnipiac has six road games left – five of which are against MAAC opposition. The Bobcats travel to Saint Peter's on Sept. 26 (12 p.m.), UMass-Lowell on Sept. 28 (7 p.m.), Marist College on Oct. 7 (7 p.m.), Canisius on Oct. 17 (1 p.m.), Fairfield on Oct. 21 (7 p.m.) and Iona College on Oct. 24 (2 p.m.).
After the regular-season finale against Siena, the MAAC Championships follow, allowing the top six teams to compete for the league's automatic bid. The quarterfinals are set for Saturday, Oct. 31; the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6; and the championship will take place on Sunday, Nov. 9. The NCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 13.
