HAMDEN, Connecticut - Members of the women's lacrosse team visited Atria Larson Place in Hamden on Friday afternoon to interact with residents of the senior living community. The visit was coordinated by juniors Kathleen DeVito, a gerontology major, and Aileen Carey, a sociology major, as part of the team's Positive Play efforts.
Quinnipiac team members socialized with residents of the assisted living facility and helped them to complete a journaling activity.
"I enjoyed visiting Atria," said Quinnipiac sophomore Devin Kelly. "Meeting people with so much life experience is very beneficial for us. Hearing about their life journeys is inspiring and it made me realize that everyone's path is unique and it's so critical to appreciate what we can learn from everyone we meet."
Head coach Danie Caro praised DeVito and Carey's initiative in coordinating the visit. "Katie and Aileen are very active in our Positive Play efforts, and volunteered to set up this event for their teammates. I thought it was great that they were able to combine their academic areas of interest with their commitment to community service."
Caro also noted that the team gains as much from these types of events as they give to the community. "I am always impressed with how generous our student-athletes are in terms of making a difference in the community. But it's even more rewarding to see them open themselves up to being impacted by the people they meet when doing these events. They definitely go outside their comfort zone, and it helps them grow as people, which is an important part of their educational experience."
The afternoon was a perfect opportunity for Quinnipiac student-athletes to chip in on Quinnipiac Athletics' Positive Play initiative. Quinnipiac is dedicated to the promotion and development of service, service learning, experiential learning, and civic engagement programs and initiatives that involve students in the local community and challenge them to critically examine the role their service plays in cultivating personal development and social change.
Quinnipiac women's lacrosse returns to action on the field with Senior Day slated on Saturday, April 18 at 3:15 p.m. against the Siena College Saints.
