QU Softball Swept at Iona on Saturday, 3-0 and 3-2

New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University softball team was swept in a MAAC doubleheader at Iona on Saturday afternoon, 3-0 and 3-2. The Bobcat offense was held at bay for much of the day by the Iona pitching, recording a combined seven hits in the two games. With the result, Quinnipiac falls to 5-11 in conference play while the Gaels improve to 11-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Iona held the Bobcats to just two hits in the first game. Sophomore Christi Costello improved to 5-4 for the Gaels this year while recording her fourth shutout and seventh complete game of the season. Costello pitched seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Senior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) took the loss for the Bobcats while tallying her seventh complete game of the season. Lindsley gave up six hits, three runs – two earned – over six innings.

Junior catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) was 1-for-3 at the plate while sophomore Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) registered the second Bobcat hit, going 1-for-2 against the Gaels in the first contest.

After a scoreless first inning, Iona took a 1-0 lead in the second off an unearned run. With one out, the second Gael batter singled up the middle and advanced to third on a stolen base and an error by the catcher. A ground-rule double to right center brought home the first run. The Gaels scored again in the third off an RBI single and tallied one more in the sixth.

Senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) pitched well in the second game, but received the loss after allowing six hits and three runs over six innings. The Bobcats collected five hits and two runs off the Iona pitching. Freshman Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance and one run scored. Barba finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI while freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. The starting pitcher registered the fifth hit, going 1-for-3 with a double.

In the second game, Iona jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of Robey. The leadoff hitter connected for a single to left field and stole second to get in scoring position. She was able to advance to third on a ground ball for the first out of the inning. Iona pushed the first run across the plate with a fielder's choice to the shortstop.

The Bobcats answered in the top of the third to tie the score at 1-1. Ascher started the inning with a single to right field and reached second on a throwing error. Barba stepped into the box and drove home the first run of the day with an infield single to second.

After the Gaels bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third, Quinnipiac again tied the game with one run in the fourth. Robey helped herself out with a lead off ground-rule double to deep center field. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California). With one out, Herzog recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field.

With the score tied at 2-2, sophomore Kelsey Long connected for a solo homerun to right center field on an 0-2 pitch. The solo shot turned out to be the eventual game-winning run. The Bobcats threatened in the top of the seventh when Herzog led off with a single to center field. Lindsley came in to pinch hit and laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Herzog into scoring position. With one out and a runner on second base, the Gaels retired the final two batters on a line out to left field and a fly out to center.

Up next, Quinnipiac will return home on Sunday, April 26 for a doubleheader with the Rider Broncs. The first game is slated to start at 12 p.m. from the QU Softball field in Hamden, Connecticut.
