QU Men's Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale at Marist, 7-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team fell in its final match of the regular season Monday afternoon to the Marist Red Foxes, 7-0, at the Marist Tennis Pavilion.

Quinnipiac falls to 11-9 (5-2 MAAC) with the loss while Marist improve to 13-7 (6-1 MAAC). The Red Foxes finish the regular season in second place to the undefeated Monmouth Hawks while the Bobcats finish in third, meaning these two teams will face off in a rematch in the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament on Saturday, April 25.

The Bobcats and Red Foxes match on Monday was highly contested and could have gone either way three singles matches went to three sets and three more singles matches featured at least one tiebreaker.

In doubles play, Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) battled in a long No. 1 doubles match that went into an extended tiebreaker but the Bobcats duo fell to Fredrik Bjerke and Joe Motta, 8-7 (10). Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, New York) and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) faced off with Rudolf Kurz and Jan Dernic in No. 3 singles but Ambrosio and van Biezen lost, 8-4. In No. 2 singles, Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) lost for just the second time all season as the pair fell to Justin Chanthalangsy and Matteo Giudici, 8-3.

Singles play was as close as it could get between the Bobcats and the Red Foxes. Kuwert and Kurz played one of the longer matches of the day with Kuwert winning the first match in a long tiebreaker but falling in the next two sets, 6-7 (9), 6-3, 10-5. Roser and Giudici also faced off in a long, three-set match but fell after winning the first set as well, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 11-9. Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) played well in No. 6 singles after getting doubles off, but fell to Dernic in the loss, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) also got doubles play off before his match with Dube but could not finish off a comeback after a second set win and fell, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

In the two, two-set matches, Ezaka battled hard with Chanthalangsy but Ezaka could not come away with the victory despite the close score, 7-6 (9), 7-5. Ambrosio lost the final match of the afternoon against Bjerke in No. 3 singles, 6-1, 7-5.

The Bobcats will take a few days off before traveling down to the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey for the MAAC Tournament on Saturday, April 25 where they will face the Marist Red Foxes in a rematch of Monday's match. The winner of the match between the Red Foxes and the Bobcats will face the winner of the Monmouth vs. Niagara on Sunday, April 26 in the MAAC Championship.
