HAMDEN, Conn. – In search of its fourth straight regular season title, the Quinnipiac men's soccer program announced its full 2015 schedule, featuring two exhibition matchups and 17 regular season games, today.
The schedule is not all that favorable for the Bobcats, as 10 of the 17 contests will be played away from Hamden. Coupled with arguably the most challenging non-conference slate since joining the Division I ranks, Quinnipiac has its hands full throughout the 2015 campaign.
"Again, I think our goals were the same as they have been in recent history," head coach Eric Da Costa said when asked about this year's slate. "We want to play an aggressive schedule, a schedule that's going to challenge our players physically, mentally and certainly tactically in order to prepare us for the MAAC season."
After a pair of exhibition games – at Southern Connecticut State (Aug. 18) and vs. UMass Lowell (Aug. 22) – Quinnipiac opens its regular season on the road at Boston College on Friday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. The regional foes will square off for the 11th time, the Eagles holding a seven-game unbeaten streak against the Bobcats. BC posted a 5-8-3 record in the ACC in 2014.
The most intriguing game on the schedule will be played on Monday, Aug. 31 (7 p.m.) when Quinnipiac travels to take on perennial power, University of Connecticut. In a first round rematch of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, the Bobcats visit the same field they fell short on two years ago in front of 3,000 fans. UConn posted a 10-6-3 record in 2014, missing out on the big dance by way of penalty kicks to South Florida. Quinnipiac is 0-2 all-time against the Huskies.
Quinnipiac's home opener takes place on Friday, Sept. 4 (4 p.m.) when the Bobcats host Brown University at the QU Soccer Field. Four more non-conference games follow – at Rhode Island on Sept. 12 (7 p.m.), vs. Holy Cross on Sept. 16 (4 p.m.), at Yale on Sept. 19 (7 p.m.) and at St. John's on Sept. 22 (7:30 p.m.). URI finished with a 13-5-3 record last season, falling short to Fordham, 1-0, in the A-10 Championship game. The meeting with BIG EAST foe St. John's will be the first match between the two programs.
After that, focus changes as MAAC play begins around the league on Saturday, Sept. 26. Quinnipiac opens its conference slate against Saint Peter's at the QU Soccer Field at 2 p.m. The rest of the home conference schedule consists of Marist on Oct. 7 (3 p.m.), Canisius on Oct. 17 (3 p.m.), Fairfield on Oct. 21 (2 p.m.) and Iona College on Oct. 24 (2 p.m.). The final home game against the Gaels will serve as Senior Day and Alumni Day in Hamden.
Quinnipiac's conference road slate features games at Niagara on Oct. 3 (1 p.m.), Monmouth on Oct. 10 (7 p.m.), Manhattan on Oct. 14 (7 p.m.), Siena on Oct. 28 (2 p.m.) and Rider on Oct. 31 (7 p.m.). Monmouth won the 2014 MAAC Championship with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield.
The 2015 MAAC Championship venue will be the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. Each team qualifies for the single-elimination tournament, with the first round set for Thursday, Nov. 5. The quarterfinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 6; the semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 8; and the championship game on Monday, Nov. 9. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
