EMMITSBURG, Md. - Seniors Christian Haggerty (West Nyack, N.Y.) and Kevin Kelly (Redding, Conn.) scored three goals each, but the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team fell to top-seeded Mount St. Mary's, 14-9, in Sunday's Northeast Conference Championship Game at Waldron Family Stadium. With the loss, the Bobcats end the season at 7-7, while the Mountaineers move to 9-6.
Haggerty also added an assist, while Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) had two goals and Jack Oppenheimer (Conshohocken, Pa.) had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats. Kevin Benzing (Severna Park, Md.) made 11 saves in defeat for the Bobcats. Bobby Schnibbe (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up a team-high four ground balls. For their performances during the semifinals and finals, Benzing, Haggerty and Oppenheimer were named to the NEC All-Tournament Team.
Andrew Scalley led the Mount with five goals, while Brett Schmidt had three goals and three assists. Bryant Schmidt also had three goals, while Daniel Stranix had a goal and an assist. T.C. DiBartolo, the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player, made 14 saves in the victory.
After the Mountaineers scored the game's first two goals, the Bobcats stormed back with five of the next six to take a 5-3 lead. Haggerty got the Bobcats started with the first two goals, before Oppenheimer, Kelly and Kostaras got into the act.
The teams then exchanged goals and the Bobcats' lead remained two at 6-4. But the Mount scored the last four goals of the second quarter to build an 8-6 lead at the break.
Quinnipiac cut the deficit to one on a Kostaras goal at the 12:54 mark of the third quarter. The teams then exchanged a pair of goals each, the last two coming from Quinnipiac. Kelly and Haggerty scored to cut the deficit to 10-9, before the Mountaineers scored the last four goals of the game to secure the victory.
